Understanding the impact of traumatic brain injury

Accidents occur on Nevada roads every day. Fortunately, many of these do not result in substantial harm. Serious collisions, however, can leave victims with irreparable injuries. At the Aldrich Law Firm, we understand how hard it is to cope with serious medical conditions after a crash. Traumatic brain injuries, for example, often leave victims and their families in crippling debt and with severe emotional scars.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke explains that traumatic brain injuries may present in a number of ways. For those suffering with moderate to severe TBI, symptoms can include the following:

  •          Severe, regularly occurring headaches
  •          Sensory problems
  •          Cognition issues
  •          Difficulty with speech
  •          Convulsions and seizures
  •          Problems with coordination

The most serious cases of TBI may leave patients in temporary or permanent stupors. Some of these victims may be unresponsive unless provided with a strong stimulus. Others may enter into a coma or vegetative state. These two states are similar in that the victims are unconscious and unaware of their surroundings. Vegetative state patients, however, will have sleep-wake cycles and periods in which they regain alertness. When a vegetative state continues for longer than one month, it is considered a persistent vegetative state.

In addition to these physical problems, there are a number of mental issues that may also result from a traumatic brain injury. Depression, aggression, personality changes and social awkwardness are all possible outcomes of a TBI.

It is clear that TBI can result in severe physical and emotional damage. The condition can wreak havoc not only on victims’ lives, but also on the lives of those around them.
