Before hitting the road, drivers are advised to avoid driving fatigued and warming up their vehicle in an enclosed space. Winter car accidents may also be avoided by not using the parking brake in cold, rainy, or snowy weather and not using cruise control on slippery surfaces. During long-distance winter trips, AAA recommends delaying trips if there are reports of bad weather. If this isn’t possible, they suggest that drivers let friends or loved ones know their route and expected arrival time. Bringing emergency supplies such as blankets, gloves, water, food, and a cellphone is also recommended.
When driving at night in winter weather, AAA suggests leaving the dome light on since it will make it easier for rescuers to spot drivers needing assistance. If stuck and still keeping the engine on to run the heater, drivers are advised to make sure the exhaust pipe isn’t clogged with snow to avoid carbon monoxide issues. When driving in snow, accelerating and decelerating slowly can make it easier to maintain and regain traction. When manipulating hills, getting some inertia going on a flat road before starting and not accelerating may make it easier to safely reach the top.
