Fernley car accident kills child, results in DUI arrest

The death of a Nevadan child is always a tragedy. When the death is the result of negligence, there may be civil litigation remedies available to a child’s surviving family members that could help to ensure that the people or companies responsible are held accountable. This can help the family receive closure, and also serves as a reminder to the public that negligent behavior which results in personal injury can lead to severe consequences.

A Fernley woman was arrested on a felony DUI charge after her car struck a five-year-old girl in an accident that occurred on a weekday afternoon. According to Nevada Highway Patrol officials, the woman was reversing out of the driveway and did not see the child. The driver is currently being held on bail.

A candlelight vigil was held the night after the young girl’s death, near the area in which she died. Although she had been under her grandmother’s supervision at the time of the accident, the deceased child was riding her tricycle alone past the arrested woman’s driveway because her grandmother had stopped to help another little girl.

Suffering the loss of a child can be overwhelming for family members. Sometimes, civil litigation can help to bring closure to the grieving process by making sure that the proper people or companies are held responsible for their negligent actions. When children are killed or injured as the result of drunk drivers or through premises liability, family members may find it useful to speak with an attorney to discuss possible legal remedies.
