Why do so many car crashes happen in the summer?

Whether you are one of those people who look forward to the summer months in Las Vegas all year, or you prefer cooler weather, getting out during this season can be risky. According to a study reported by the New York Post, your chances of a car accident go up in July and August.

Even though there is less inclement weather, these are the deadliest months on the road. Here’s why.

Teen drivers

Now that younger drivers are out of school for the summer, they are spending more time behind the wheel. Their inexperience significantly raises the odds that one of them will crash into you.

Drug use

More and more people are becoming addicted to opioids and other prescription medications, and these can cause impairment, particularly if you are taking something new and do not know how it will affect you. Data shows that increasingly higher numbers of drivers involved in fatal crashes have drugs in their system.

Alcohol

Not only are people spending more time outside during the longer days of the year, many are also contributing to drunk driving fatalities. Among the top holidays for alcohol-related crashes are the 4th of July and Labor Day.

According to the most recent accidental death statistics, fatalities rose to 146,571 in 2015, and motor vehicle collisions are the second leading cause. Safety experts point out that most car crashes are preventable, and they urge you and everyone else on the road to drive with care.
