Asbestos was used for years by commercial and residential homebuilders in Las Vegas and nationwide due to its inexpensive cost, ability to absorb sound, and fire and heat-resistant nature. Unfortunately, asbestos is also now well-known for causing serious health issues to those who come in contact with it, and has been the source of countless civil litigation lawsuits. The thin asbestos fibers are easily inhaled and have been known to cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and lung disease.
While some products containing asbestos are banned, many buildings still contain the substance. This was apparently the case for an electric company who was recently sued. Reports indicate that employees were asked to dispose of asbestos and asbestos-containing materials by an employer who was allegedly well aware of the risk associated with doing so. The main concern was that the individuals were not given adequate equipment to do safely, nor were they educated on the dangers of being exposed to the tainted materials.
Furthermore, one employee stated that he was instructed to get rid of the material in a way that seemed to indicate that the company did not want others to become aware of its presence. Court records indicate that the plaintiff claims the electric company was aware of the risk that comes with working with asbestos, or at least should have been aware.
The plaintiff is seeking compensation for damages. He claims that he has, or will, suffer personal injury, and is also seeking class-action status to include others who may have suffered.
