There are many ways in which visitors to Las Vegas spend their time. Several times a year, a big draw is boxing matches with famous boxers headlining. While most boxers save their fighting for the ring, two men, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, have taken a disagreement to court to be determined. Things there appear to be getting just as heated as they likely would in the boxing ring.
The lawsuit was filed by Pacquiao in 2009 after Mayweather allegedly said that Pacquiao utilized substances to enhance his physical performance in the ring. After denying the allegation, Pacquiao filed a defamation claim seeking financial damages that have not been indicated.
Though the lawsuit is still pending, recently Mayweather was ordered by a federal judge to pay $113,774 in costs and legal fees. The sanction is a result of Mayweather’s refusal to complete his deposition in the case. Depositions are a vital part of the fact-finding that is done in lawsuits before a trial starts. Allegedly Mayweather failed to appear at his scheduled deposition.
While Pacquiao’s side is likely pleased that Mayweather is facing consequences for his failure to answer its questions, this ruling was not what it was ultimately seeking. It had earlier hoped to prevail in a default judgment against Mayweather that was denied.
Interestingly, these boxers have never come face-to-face in the ring. While this lawsuit definitely puts any plans for such a pairing on hold, one can only imagine what a charged fight that would be.
