What makes motorcycle accidents so dangerous?

Cruising through Las Vegas and the desert beyond on a motorcycle is an experience that can’t be beat. Plenty of people must feel that way, considering there are about 71,000 registered motorcycles in the state.

Riding on two wheels is exhilarating, but it can also be dangerous.

Fatalities are more likely

In 2024, Nevada’s roadways saw 412 fatalities from crashes. Eighty-four of those were motorcyclists. Other motorcycle accidents resulted in serious injuries.

Motorcycles are smaller than cars and trucks, and being visible is a constant challenge for motorcyclists. Many accidents occur because drivers fail to see the motorcycle, especially if the bike is in the driver’s blind spot. In addition, many drivers lack awareness of how motorcycles maneuver and may unintentionally cut them off or collide with them.

One of the key factors leading to the catastrophic nature of most motorcycle accidents is the lack of protection. A vehicle has a heavy metal body surrounding the driver and their passengers. In addition, they have the added safety features of seatbelts and airbags that keep everyone in place, surrounded by a shield to absorb much of the impact.

Motorcyclists have no such barrier, meaning the riders are more exposed to the forces of the crash. Even at slower speeds, riders are likely to experience serious injuries. While protective gear, such as padded jackets, gloves, pants and boots, can provide some protection, they are no match for the force associated with high-speed collisions.

Spinal cord injuries often occur in motorcycle accidents. When riders are ejected from their bikes, they often hit the ground or another object with substantial force. The impact can cause fractures or other damage to the spine, resulting in partial or complete paralysis. Even with surgery and therapy, a victim could experience limited mobility and chronic pain for the rest of their life.

Awareness campaigns, such as “Look twice, save a life,” remind drivers to be on the lookout for motorcycles. If you love riding the roads on two wheels, hopefully, you will always arrive safely to your destination. But if an accident does occur, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your injuries.
