How can lane splitting result in vehicle collisions?

Lane splitting is a practice wherein motorcyclists ride between slow-moving or stopped traffic lanes. White-lining is often touted as a way to reduce congestion and save time.

While it offers potential benefits for motorcyclists, it also introduces unique safety risks that can result in vehicle collisions. Understanding how lane splitting can contribute to crashes is essential for both motorcyclists and drivers who want to share the road more safely.

Sudden lane changes by drivers

When traffic is heavy and moving slowly, drivers often switch lanes without checking their mirrors or blind spots thoroughly. A motorcyclist splitting lanes may be in one of these blind spots, leading to a side-swipe or direct collision.

Unlike cars, motorcycles are smaller and less visible, especially when weaving between larger vehicles. A driver making an unexpected maneuver can easily strike a motorcyclist who is lane splitting at a high speed.

Speed differentials

Speed differential is the difference in speed between the motorcyclist and the surrounding traffic. When a motorcyclist travels significantly faster than the surrounding vehicles, they have less time to react to:

  • Sudden movements
  • Road debris
  • Brake lights

Even a small miscalculation or unexpected obstacle can lead to a crash.

Limited space for maneuvering

Motorcyclists rely on space for quick adjustments and emergency braking. While lane splitting, that space is extremely limited. Cars may drift within their lanes, reducing the buffer zone available to the rider. A small encroachment from a car into the lane line can cause the motorcyclist to lose control. In tight conditions, even a minor misalignment or overcorrection can result in a collision.

While lane splitting can be an efficient practice under the right circumstances, it carries inherent risks that can lead to serious vehicle collisions. When a collision transpires due to line splitting, affected road users can benefit from legal feedback to determine who was at fault for that accident.
