Insurance coverage may fall short of motorcycle crash costs

Insurance coverage is mandatory for all drivers in Nevada. They have to have at least liability coverage that meets baseline standards. The people involved in collisions often expect insurance to cover their costs.

After all, every motorist must carry both property damage and bodily injury coverage. Contrary to what people might expect, insurance may not actually sufficiently address the aftermath of a crash. Especially when the person filing a claim was on a motorcycle at the time of an accident, the cost that they incur might go beyond what insurance covers.

Insurance requirements are quite low

Nevada insurance requirements are sufficient to cover the cost of a minor collision. However, as crash severity increases, so do the long-term expenses. A driver with minimal insurance coverage may only have $25,000 in bodily injury coverage to provide to an injured motorcycle rider.

That coverage must pay for not just their medical care but also their lost income. Frequently, injured motorcycle riders have tens of thousands of dollars in hospital expenses and even more lost income to address.

If a review of an insurance policy indicates that coverage is likely to be too low given total losses, then civil litigation may be necessary. The driver who hit the motorcycle rider is often liable for losses that their insurance doesn’t cover. There could also be businesses, including manufacturers and the employer of the driver at fault, with a degree of liability for the crash.

Injured motorcycle riders can potentially file lawsuits against at-fault drivers and even third parties to recover their losses. Recognizing that insurance could be insufficient is often the first step toward addressing the financial aftermath of a motorcycle collision effectively.
