Why passenger vehicles should not follow school buses too closely

School buses play a crucial role in transporting children safely to and from school. These vehicles are designed with unique safety features and operate under specific traffic rules that differ from regular passenger cars.

However, many drivers often overlook these differences and follow school buses too closely. This behavior disrupts traffic flow and creates dangerous conditions for students and other road users. Understanding why keeping a safe distance matters can help ensure safer roads for everyone.

Increased stopping frequency

School buses make frequent stops to pick up or drop off children along their routes. Unlike passenger vehicles, these stops are often unplanned from the perspective of other drivers. A driver who follows a bus too closely may not have enough time to react when the bus brakes suddenly.

Limited visibility for other drivers

When driving directly behind a large school bus, visibility becomes limited. Drivers may struggle to see road signs, traffic lights or potential hazards ahead. This lack of visibility makes anticipating traffic conditions harder and adjusting accordingly. By keeping a safe following distance, drivers can regain better visibility of the road, helping to ensure that they make safer and more informed decisions while driving.

Protection for children outside the bus

Children boarding or leaving a school bus are particularly vulnerable. They may unexpectedly:

  • Cross the road
  • Walk behind the bus
  • Move into traffic

Following a bus too closely reduces the reaction time a driver has if a child suddenly appears. School buses use flashing lights and stop arms to signal when children are entering or exiting, and drivers who are too close may not notice or respect these signals in time.

Driving near school buses requires extra caution and patience. Their size, frequent stops and the presence of children create unique conditions that demand greater responsibility from surrounding drivers. Should a passenger vehicle hit a student because they were following the school bus too closely, in that case, the parent of the child, in collaboration with the school, should enlist dedicated legal support to hold the reckless driver accountable.
