3 tips for cyclists to minimize their risk of a car crash

Cycling can be a fun form of exercise. It is also a cost-effective means of transportation and even an opportunity for socialization. Avid cyclists can bike year-round in Nevada thanks to the local climate.

Every time a cyclist heads out onto a public road instead of a bike path, they need to take steps to ensure their own safety. The three tips below can help limit the likelihood of a car colliding with a bicycle in traffic.

1. Focus on communication

Much like drivers, cyclists have an obligation to communicate with others in traffic. They need to indicate their intent to turn or stop. Either hand signals or aftermarket lights added to a bicycle make it possible to warn drivers when a cyclist plans to stop or turn.

2. Prioritize visibility

Many drivers blame recognition errors for bicycle collisions. They don’t notice the cyclist on the road until it is too late to prevent a crash. Illuminated and reflective gear can help ensure that motorists notice a cyclist.

3. Know when to yield

Technically, cyclists have the same rights on the road as anyone else. However, it is sometimes beneficial for cyclists to yield the right of way when they may technically be able to proceed across an intersection. Attempting to make eye contact with a driver and failing to do so could be a warning sign that they did not notice the cyclist. Choosing to yield and wait a few extra seconds could potentially prevent a life-altering collision.

Making small changes can help cyclists protect themselves in traffic, although crashes may happen despite a rider’s best efforts. Those hurt by unsafe or distracted drivers may need to file insurance claims or take legal action after a preventable car-bicycle crash.
