Vehicle issues are a leading cause of semi-truck crashes

Semi-truck collisions are often the results of operator errors. Drivers get too close to others on the road or exceed reasonable speeds, given traffic conditions.

However, there are other situations that can lead to devastating semi-truck crashes that are mostly or totally outside of the control of individual drivers. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) evaluates commercial vehicle crashes and provides statistical information about the underlying cause of wrecks.

Mistakes by drivers, inadequate surveillance and non-performance due to falling asleep or experiencing a medical emergency are among the top causes of semi-truck collisions. The FMCSA also recognizes issues with a vehicle as a top cause of collisions.

What vehicle issues cause wrecks?

Approximately one-tenth of the commercial crashes evaluated occurred due to an issue with the commercial vehicle. In some cases, maintenance concerns or improperly-performed repairs are to blame for semi-truck collisions. If brakes fail or steering becomes unresponsive, truck drivers may not be able to maneuver as they need to for safety in traffic.

Other times, there may be defects in vehicle components that suddenly fail. Finally, improperly-loaded cargo can result in a driver losing control. Each of these unique scenarios might lead to a business being liable for the incident.

Trucking companies or service providers might be liable for crashes caused by improper or delayed maintenance. Manufacturers might be reliable for defective parts that cause crashes. Clients might be responsible for improperly loading a semi-truck.

Reviewing what occurred before and during a semi-truck crash with a skilled legal team can help injured people understand their rights. A complicated commercial insurance claim or personal injury lawsuit may be necessary to recover collision expenses if a business is ultimately at fault for a crash.
