Taking photos after an auto accident: 3 types to consider

Things happen fast when you get involved in an auto accident. You may not even be on the scene for very long. People may be transported to medical centers, and the police may ask you to move your vehicle.

As such, it is important to gather evidence. Taking pictures is one of the fastest and most effective ways to do so.

Exchanging information

To begin with, you need to be able to identify the other driver, and you should exchange insurance information. You may just want to use your phone to take a picture of their insurance card, their driver’s license and their license plate.

Identifying the damage

Next, if you have suffered injuries or if there is damage to your vehicle, you can take specific pictures of these issues. This helps in two key ways. For one thing, it shows that the damage and injuries actually happened in the accident in question and not at a different time. Secondly, it helps to show the severity, as you may end up seeking compensation for medical bills and other costs.

Demonstrating fault

Finally, pictures and videos at the scene could be very helpful in demonstrating fault, especially if you will need to move your vehicle. Taking pictures of the accident scene helps to preserve that evidence. Try to get any important factors like street signs, stop signs, stoplights, road designs and the position of the cars when they came to rest. If there are any questions about who was at fault, your pictures may clearly demonstrate which driver made the mistake.

If it was the other driver whose negligence caused the accident, then you may be able to seek appropriate financial compensation, and it is important to know what legal steps to take.
