Can the other driver blame GPS after causing a crash?

You get involved in a head-on accident – but the catch is that you are on a one-way street. You were driving in the correct direction when another driver suddenly turned onto the road, headed the wrong way, and struck your vehicle before you could have taken any steps to avoid the accident.

You suspect that the driver is intoxicated or otherwise impaired, since they have made such a significant error. However, when they get out of their car, they tell you that their GPS was telling them where to go. They say they are not to blame for the accident. They just followed the GPS instructions, and it was the GPS that got it wrong.

That driver is still responsible

Even if the driver is telling the truth, perhaps because their GPS had outdated maps, they are still responsible for the mistake that they made. Following the GPS does not absolve them of their responsibility to drive safely and make the correct decisions.

For instance, there should still be one-way signs on the road, telling that driver which way traffic is supposed to be moving. Even if an outdated GPS tells them to drive in the opposite direction, it is up to that driver to read these signs and respond appropriately. Like a paper map, a GPS is a tool that they can use, but they still have personal responsibility for all of the decisions that they make behind the wheel.

Seeking compensation

If you were injured in the accident, all because of that driver’s negligent mistake, you may deserve financial compensation for medical bills, lost wages and more. Take the time to carefully look into your legal options.
