New concussion test being questioned

Nevada residents may have access to a new blood test that can detect signs of a traumatic brain injury. Despite some reports, however, it does not determine if a person has a concussion. The test, which was recently approved by the FDA, is used to decide if a person might benefit from a CT scan by looking for proteins in the blood.

Brain injuries may carry higher risk of dementia

Nevada residents who have suffered a traumatic brain injury may be at increased risk of dementia, a study published in January 2018 indicates. These injuries led to over 2.5 million visits to the emergency room in 2013 around the country, and it is a major cause of disability and fatalities.

What to know about TBIs

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 138 people die each year from traumatic brain injuries. However, there are others throughout Nevada and the U.S. who will deal with the consequences of a TBI for the rest of their lives. While there are several main causes of these injuries, the truth is that they can happen at any time even if an accident doesn't seem overly severe.

Innovative system uses eye tracking to detect brain injuries

The vision tests typically performed by optometrists in Nevada do more than just check an individual's sight. Often, results from eye tests can detect early signs of health issues, such as diabetes, certain forms of dementia, autism and concussions. The purpose of the RightEye's EyeQ system is to give eye doctors even more insights into what's going on with the brain.
